Delivered in two stages by Alder for Redland City Council, the project links Snapper Street lookouts over Frenchman’s Beach with the Gorge Walk Trailhead, creating a seamless coastal pathway through one of Queensland’s most scenic destinations.

Project Highlights

Boardwalk Structures

The project delivered timber and composite boardwalks, viewing decks and lookouts, creating safe and accessible connections along the coastline.

Frenchman Stairs

Stage 2 included the construction of the Frenchman Stairs, incorporating 220 steps over a 40-metre vertical rise.

Foundation Works

A total of 225 screw piles, pile caps and driven composite piles were installed across both stages to support the walk's boardwalks, stairs and viewing structures.

Pathway Network

The project included decorative concrete surfaces and 477m² of coloured bitumen pathways to improve pedestrian access and connectivity.

Public Amenities

Park infrastructure included custom seating, picnic tables, drinking fountains, bicycle racks, fencing, bollards and waste facilities.

Landscaping Works

Extensive landscaping and revegetation works incorporated mulch, topsoil, erosion control measures, jute matting, turf and native planting across the site.

Local Participation

Local North Stradbroke Island businesses, subcontractors and Indigenous workforce participants were engaged throughout the delivery of the project.

Roadworks Infrastructure

Roadworks included pavement construction, kerb and channel, stormwater infrastructure, headwalls, bollards, line marking and signage to support safe access throughout the precinct.

Site Remediation

Land remediation works were undertaken, including the removal of unsuitable material to prepare the site for construction.

Stage 1, completed in late 2021, involved the installation of timber boardwalks and viewing decks using Wagners CFT substructure and Modwood decking, alongside decorative concrete surfacing and coloured bitumen footpaths. Works included road construction with kerb and channel, stormwater infrastructure, and land remediation. Park furniture, fencing, bike racks, and waste enclosures were installed, complemented by landscaping with rock retaining walls, erosion control matting, and native planting. Community engagement and careful staging ensured minimal disruption during peak holiday periods, with local subcontractors and Indigenous workforce participation.

Stage 2 extended the trail from Snapper Street to the Gorge Walk Trailhead, incorporating 900m² of composite boardwalk and the Frenchman Stairs upgrade—220 steps spanning a 40-metre vertical rise. Additional works included 477m² of Streetflex coloured bitumen paths, custom park furniture, and 4,500m² of landscaping with mulching, jute matting, and revegetation. Structural elements comprised 130 screw piles and 130 driven composite piles with concrete pilecaps. Alder navigated challenging terrain and remote site logistics while engaging local North Stradbroke Island businesses for civil works and landscaping.

Together, these stages showcase Alder’s expertise in delivering complex infrastructure in environmentally sensitive and high-profile locations, balancing functionality, durability, and community benefit.
